DHAKA: The nation welcomed the year 2013 with a new pledge to advance the country on a higher growth track after some exciting political developments in the previous year.

In the year that has just gone, the country experienced remarkable happenings over Padma Bridge corruption, Railway scam, Ilias Ali missing, war crimes trial and some other important issues, with a marked lack of unity between the government and the opposition on the issues.
The year is also notable for some other vital events, including Tazreen Fashion fire, Ramu and Patia violence, leak of Skype conversation of ICT judge Nizamul Haque, verdict in Saudi Embassy official Khalaf Al Ali case and Biswajit killing.
Rangpur City Corporation election, Gazipur and Tangail by-polls inauguration of Banani overpass and maritime victory were also in the list of the positive event of the year just gone.
The year 2012 was a great loss for the country’s cultural arena. The country lost some prominent figures, including eminent film maker Subhash Dutta, Humayun Ahmed, Humayun Faridee, Professor Iazuddin Ahmed, Journalist Ataus Samad, journalist and writer Fayez Ahmed, Khan Sarwar Murshid and Economist Dr Muzaffar Ahmed.
Despite the political conflicts, the whole nation is expecting peace, progress and stability in the country in the coming year to harness the prospects for a better future of the people.
On the eve of the New Year, President M Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted the people of the country through separate messages. more...
