TOKYO, Japan - As the Japanese company, Sumitomo Forestry marks its 350th anniversary in the year 2041 - it is aiming to unveil its latest project - the world’s tallest wooden skyscraper.

Sumitomo Forestry launched plans to build the world's tallest wooden skyscraper, pointing out in a statement that 10 percent of the 70-storey W350 tower would be steel.

However, this would be combined with about 180,000 cubic metres of indigenous wood, enough to build about 8,000 homes, and trees and foliage on balconies at every level.

According to the company’s statement, the “braced tube structure, diagonal steel vibration-control braces at the centre of a 350m (1,150ft) wood and steel column and would protect against Tokyo's regular earthquakes.”

Sumitomo Forestry has said that the projected cost of the building is about 600 billion yen, which is about twice the cost of a conventional skyscraper of the same size.

However, the company said that it expected costs to fall before completion due to technological breakthroughs.

The world’s tallest wooden skyscraper would house offices, shops, hotels and homes.

Currently, reports have pointed out that a 53m block of student flats in Vancouver is the world's tallest wooden skyscraper.
