SRINAGAR, India - On Saturday morning, an Army camp in India’s northern Jammu and Kashmir state suffered a terrorist attack, reportedly led by Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists.

The terrorists reportedly opened fire at the Sunjuwan Army camp where family quarters are located early in the morning, killing two army personnel.

The Indian Army said in a statement that nine others, including five women and children were injured in the attack.

Subsequently, four terrorists were also shot dead by the Army and officials said that the Army and the police had launched a joint operation to find any remaining terrorists.

Jammu-based Army PRO Lieutenant-Colonel Devender Anand said in a statement, “In the early hours on Saturday, after a brief exchange of fire with sentry on the periphery, some terrorists entered the family accommodation complex. The quick response teams have cordoned off the area and isolated the terrorists, who are holed up in a few houses [inside the camp].”

He added, “The terrorists were wearing fatigues and carried assault rifles, along with a large amount of ammunition and hand grenades.”

The spokesman added that the site was cordoned off and surrounded by police and army units called in as reinforcements.

He added, ”The operations will continue till all terrorists are apprehended or killed.”

Meanwhile, S.D. Singh Jamwal, the inspector general of police in Jammu, said in a statement that a guard noticed suspicious movement before gunfire on his bunker.

He added, “The fire was retaliated. The number of militants isn’t known. Due to the presence of women and children in the housing colony, the operation is progressing cautiously to minimise the casualties.”

Later in the day, Abdul Rehman Veeri, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister informed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly that Subedar Madanlal Chowdhary and Subedar Mohammad Ashraf Mir were killed in the attack by a group of militants.

Further, he added that a high alert has been sounded in Jammu and security in and around the city has been beefed up.

Previously, in 2006, terrorists had attacked the same camp.
