RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - A week after 140 jobs at the Saudi Arabia’s passport office were posted online, officials announced that a whopping 107,000 Saudi women sent their job applications for a role.

The General Directorate of Passports took to Twitter to announced on January 18 that it was looking for female applicants for roles at airports and the country's land borders.

Local media reports stated that within a week, some 107,000 women had applied for the 140 positions at Saudi Arabia's passport office.

According to a report in the Arab News newspaper, the overwhelming level of interest "amazed" officials.

Following the response, the office had subsequently closed the online application process.

The office said in its job post that applicants were required to have a high school degree or the equivalent and be aged between 25 and 35.

The massive job applications from female citizens came as Saudi Arabia is opening up its conservative society.

The keen interest came amid huge social changes sweeping the country, after Saudi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made efforts to turn around the oil-dependent economy and return it to more “moderate” Islam.

Further, in September, the government introduced a royal decree allowing women to drive this summer and letting women and girls attend sports events.

Currently, female unemployment in the kingdom stands at around 33 percent, compared to an overall rate of 12 percent.
