Flight from Chicago to Hong Kong forced to land

Pane carrying over 200 passengers

HONG KONG, China - United Airlines revealed on Saturday that it was forced to divert a plane scheduled to go from Chicago to Hong Kong after the plane’s toilets were vandalized. 

United Airlines said that the plane carrying over 200 passengers was forced to be diverted to Alaska after two of the aircraft's toilets were vandalized with excrement.

Officials said that the flight was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Anchorage on Thursday evening due to a "passenger smearing faeces everywhere.”

Police said the man, a U.S. resident of Vietnamese origin, made no threats.

However, so far, it is not clear what led to the episode taking place.

Anchorage Airport police spokesman Lt Joe Gamache said, "We received a report of a passenger who had messed up the bathrooms with his own faeces.”

Lt Gamache added that the passenger is a 22-year-old whose name has not been released, but was co-operative and faced "no appropriate charges for anything criminal.”

The man did not try to interfere with the flight crew, and was handcuffed by police at Anchorage International Airport and escorted off the plane.

According to a statement released by the police, the man was taken to a hospital for a mental health assessment after being interviewed through a translator.

Later, United Airlines released a statement saying that flight UA895 was carrying 245 people when it was diverted because of "a disruptive passenger.”

The airline also added that hotel accommodation was provided for those on board.
