MUMBAI, India - The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has broken the world record, by handling 969 flights in a single day.

The airport based in Mumbai has two runways but both can never operate simultaneously, as both the runways criss-cross each other.

The international airport set the record on Friday and the record was more than any other airport that operates a single runway has ever handled over a 24-hour period.

The country’s aviation sector is set to be the third biggest in the world behind China and the U.S.

India’s aviation sector, which is driven by a combination of cheaper airfares and rising incomes is experiencing a boom.

With incomes rising and fares becoming cheaper, budget carriers are fueling air travel in India.

The world record further reiterated that traffic in the country is surging.

An official at the Mumbai International Airport said that the aim is to reach 1,000 aircraft movements.

Last year, Indian carriers flew about 100 million domestic passengers and the International Air Transport Association estimates the market will add about 337 million more in the next two decades.

According to low-cost airline SpiceJet, about 97 percent of India’s 1.3 billion people have never been on an airplane, which the airline claims indicate the potential for growth in traffic.

Reports noted that Mumbai routinely handles more than 900 take-offs and landings per day and the airport is hoping to soon hit the 1,000 mark.
