LONDON, U.K. - Queen Elizabeth II, on Monday set another historic milestone as the first British monarch to reach her sapphire jubilee, with an unprecedented 65 years on the throne.> BNN
In September 2015, she surpassed the reign of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, a record she said was "not one to which I have ever aspired."
She also became the world's longest-reigning living monarch in October last year when Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej died.
The Queen is likely to spend Accession Day away from Buckingham Palace, at her Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, eastern England where her father, George VI, died of lung cancer on this date in 1952, after a 15-year reign.
Events to mark the occasion will, meanwhile, be held across the country.
A 41-gun royal salute will take place by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Green Park, London, as well as a procession of military horses pulling World War I-era artillery pieces are part of official commemorations will be held.
A photograph the Queen wearing sapphire jewelry given to her by her father as a wedding gift in 1947 has also been reissued.
The portrait was captured in 2014 by David Bailey and shows her wearing the glittering necklace of emerald-cut sapphires surrounded by diamonds and separated by individual diamonds, plus a pair of pendant earrings each with a single large sapphire in a diamond cluster, and all set in gold, dating from 1850.
"She has very kind eyes with a mischievous glint. I've always liked strong women, and she is a very strong woman," the photographer said at the time.
In addition, the Royal Mint will is marking the occasion with various specially designed Sapphire Jubilee commemorative coins and the Royal Mail will issue a Sapphire Blue 5 pounds stamp.
Although the 90-year-old Queen has reduced her international tours, still regularly performs official duties around Britain.
She has, however, begun passing on her role at dozens of charities, academic institutions and sporting groups to other members of the royal family.
