DUBAI, U.A.E - Emirates Airline, that has gained popularity for its classy operations and onboard luxuries has now decided to charge an add on fee for travellers who wish to reserve a set in advance. > Big News Network

The Dubai-based airline has decided to charge those customers that wish to pick their seat before the usual check-in procedure, which is 48 hours before take-off.

Emirates spokesperson said in a statement, “Emirates can confirm the introduction of a minimal charge for those looking to select their Economy Class seat in advance, for tickets issued on or after October 3, 2016.”

The government-run airline that boasts of on-flights showers and extensive movie collection has said that the new charges will apply to its two lowest fares of economy-class seat categories, Special and Saver and will be different for flights, based on the duration of the journey.

Meanwhile, the airline reportedly confirmed that its Skyward members will be excluded from the charges if they are on silver or gold membership and higher.

The airline added that children below the age of two and accompanying passengers on the same booking will be exempted from the fee.

The spokesperson further added, “This charge is also not applicable once online check-in opens, which is 48 hrs before flight departure. At this stage, seat selection is free.”

The extra fee ranges from $15 for short-haul flights from Dubai and increases to $40 for long-haul destinations like Canada, Australia and the U.S.

The change is said to align Emirates with what many other universal transporters have accomplished for years, creating another income stream for the government-owned airline.
